Three Strategies to Build Resilience in Tough Times

Are you ready for a good laugh?

Here’s the FULL blooper reel from the recording of my online course. It’s pretty funny!

I experienced so many emotions during those hours, days, and weekends of recording. I felt excited, frustrated, playful, confused, relieved, happy . . . you’ll see!

Imagine if you could watch a recording of yourself during the past ten weeks! How many different emotions would you observe?

Thankfully, this pandemic won’t last forever. As Robert Schuller said:

“Tough times never last, but tough people do!”

Here are three strategies to build resilience in tough times:

Strategy #1: Add Laughter to Your Life

Laughter causes your body to release endorphins – the body’s natural pain killer – and to reduce the stress hormone, cortisol. Look for ways to add humour to your life. Watch a funny movie, share a funny video, or post silly photos. Do what you can to add laughter to your life.

Strategy #2: Celebrate Your Accomplishments

What are some of your recent accomplishments? Take some time to appreciate and celebrate how far you’ve already come. You’ve overcome obstacles to get to where you are today. You have survived and thrived beyond challenges in the past. If the need arises, you can do it again!

Strategy #3: Affirm the Positive

Repeat after me: “I am a smart, strong, successful, intelligent, and competent individual.” Feel free to add to your list! Write some positive phrases about yourself and affirm them out loud when needed. As Zig Ziglar said:

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”

Building your resiliency skills will help you to withstand and recover quickly from difficult conditions. Add laughter to your life, celebrate your accomplishments, and affirm the positive. Tough times never last, but resilient people like you do!

All my best,

Denise Marek
